Orientation & Mobility Specialist

The role of the Certified Orientation & Mobility Specialist (COMS) at Eaton ISD includes the following:

  • Suggested they maintain current membership in a professional organization: Association for the Education and Rehabilitation of the Blind and Visually Impaired (AERVI)
  • Suggested they maintain current certification: Academy for Certification of Vision Rehabilitation and Education Professionals (ACVREP)
  • Address referrals for O & M evaluations
  • Consult with other members of the Multidisciplinary Evaluation Team
  • Participate in IFSP and IEP meetings
  • Develop IEP goals appropriate to the instructional level of the student
  • Provide direct O & M instruction to visually impaired students
  • Provide consultation to teachers, parents, students, and other school personnel
  • Maintain knowledge of current materials, techniques, and adaptive aids and devices
  • Maintain accurate and prompt records and reports
  • Attend meetings, in-service trainings and professional development activities
