Student Surveys

Student surveys provide data upon which to make data-based decisions regarding program planning and grant seeking. They also provide data for needs assessment for our state, counties, and local communities. The following two surveys are the foundations for Michigan's youth risk behavior data:

  1. Michigan Profile for Healthy Youth (MiPHY): The Michigan Profile for Healthy Youth is an online student health survey offered by the Michigan Departments of Education and Community Health to support local and regional needs assessment. The MiPHY provides student results on health risk behaviors including substance use, violence, physical activity, nutrition, sexual behavior, and emotional health in grades 7, 9, and 11. The survey also measures risk and protective factors most predictive of alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use and violence. MiPHY results, along with other school-reported data, will help schools make data-driven decisions to improve prevention and health promotion programming.

MiPHY is available free every other year on from September 1 through May 31 during school years ending in an even number, such as 2009-10 and 2011-12. For more information, visit www.michigan.gov/miphy.

MiPHY data is available for Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham Counties in a set of summaries:

MiPHY 2010 All Risk Behaviors Summary

MiPHY 2010 ATOD Survey Results Summary

MiPHY 2010 Physical Activity Survey Results Summary

MiPHY 2010 Medical Health Survey Results Summary

MiPHY 2010 Sexual Behavior Results Summary

MiPHY 2010 Violence Survey Results Summary

MiPHY 2010 Weight Nutrition Survey Results Summary

  2. MiPHY Toolkits have been created by Anne Barna, Health Analyst for the Barry-Eaton District Health Department.  The toolkits allow school districts to share their MiPHY data with school and community stakeholders.  School district staff first enters their local MiPHY data into a spreadsheet that already has 2010 MiPHY county data entered.  The toolkit then allows schools to create their own fact sheets using the data.

  3. Michigan Youth Risk Behavior Survey (YRBS): The Michigan Youth Risk Behavior Survey is part of a nationwide surveying effort led by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to monitor students' health risks and behaviors in six categories identified as most likely to result in adverse outcomes. These categories include unintentional injury and violence, tobacco use, alcohol and other drug use, sexual behaviors that contribute to unintended pregnancy or disease, dietary behaviors, and physical inactivity. High response rates allow results of the Michigan YRBS to be generalized to all Michigan students in grades 9-12. Results of the YRBS are disseminated in a variety of means.

MI YRBS is administered to a randomly drawn, representative sample of high schools every other year during school years ending in an odd number, such as 2008-09 and 2010-11. For more information, visit www.michigan.gov/yrbs.
