Nonviolent Crisis Intervention

(Verbal and Physical De-escalation Skills)

Crisis-those narrow moments in time when irrationality, fear and chaos seem to consume your efforts to provide a safe learning environment. Although frightening and at times dangerous, well-managed crisis situations can be opportunities for growth.

Opportunities to grow in skills while dealing with crisis and its effective resolution form the basis for Nonviolent Crisis Intervention, a training offered through Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) and provided by Eaton ISD. With these procedures, staff will gain the skills and confidence needed to deal with students whose behavior may be escalating towards a full-blown crisis, and hopefully, prevent this escalation. Staff will also learn how to deal with situations that have already escalated in a manner that provides the best "care, welfare, safety and security" for all involved.

If verbal escalation turns into physical violence, this training equips staff to handle the individual safely and effectively, again using the best "care, welfare, safety and security" for all involved.

This training is offered free of charge for Eaton County school personnel at Eaton ISD. If you are working in Ingham or Clinton County schools, please call Denise Lycos (Ingham ISD), 517-244-1354, or Caryn Coyle (Clinton RESA), 989-224-6831, ext. 102.

For those schools who would like training on site, we can provide that for a fee. Please call Micki Fuhrman, 517-541-8759.
