Bullying Prevention Programs

The Michigan State Board of Education has adopted a bullying policy requiring public schools to have policy and programs to prevent bullying. View curriculum and resources available.

Michigan Model for Health

Learn the skills needed to resolve conflict and prevent violence. Curriculum includes conflict resolution and violence prevention lessons for K-12th grade. Staff development and resources are available to all schools. Contact Wendy Sellers at 517-541-8768.

Backpack Program

Reinforcing conflict resolution skills, including bullying prevention, at home and school increases the likelihood they will be used. This program offers services and resources to elementary schools. Contact Micki Fuhrman 517-541-8759.

Peer Assistance and Leadership (PALs)

Children often talk to their peers when problems arise. Preparing selected youth to listen effectively, mediate conflicts, and refer serious problems provides a cadre of available peers. Training for youth in grades 4 through 12 is available. Contact Micki Fuhrman at 517-541-8767.

Nonviolent Crisis Intervention

Proven strategies de-escalate situations and keep interactions at a verbal level. Teams learn to respond to crises in a nonviolent way. Staff development is available for school employees who work with youth. Contact Micki Fuhrman at 517-541-8759.

Parent Education Workshops

Violence and bullying prevention begins in the home. Parent education focuses on forming supportive networks and building personal skills. Classes are scheduled throughout the year or may be requested. Contact Gary Owen at 517-541-8913.

Asset Development

Young people are more likely to behave in safe and healthy ways when the positive assets each individual, family, and community possess are developed. Presentations and training for school and community groups are available. Contact Sara Lurie at 517-541-8711.

Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Planning

Comprehensive prevention requires intentional implementation of plans to address the needs of each school community. Facilitation and training are available. Contact Wendy Sellers at 517-541-8768.

Suicide Prevention

Suicide is the third leading cause of death among children and young people ages 10 through 24. PPS supports schools and communities in their suicide prevention efforts by providing information and resources. The Michigan Model for Health includes suicide prevention themes, such as depression awareness and how to get help, in lessons for all K-12 students.
