Alcohol, Tobacco, and Other Drug Prevention

The Prevention Program Services (PPS) department of Eaton Intermediate School District offers evidence-based prevention programming to foster resiliency in all youth, rather than targeting only those at risk. Developmentally appropriate prevention strategies are used in order to counteract the multiple risk factors for alcohol, tobacco, and other drug use. Originally formed as Region 13 Substance Abuse Prevention and Education (SAPE) in 1976, PPS has been a leader in drug prevention and health promotion for over 30 years.

Our Mission is to provide quality services that promote health, increase protective factors, and prevent risk. Our service area includes the schools and communities of Clinton, Eaton, and Ingham Counties in the capital area of mid-Michigan.

A FEW EXAMPLES:

  • Peer Assistance and Leadership (PAL) provides middle school and high school students training in effective communication skills, problem-solving, decision-making, and conflict resolution. Students who are trained then use these skills to help other students.
  • K-12 comprehensive school health education, including the Michigan Model for Health, training promotes healthy lifestyles, sends a strong "no use" message, and helps students practice refusal skills.
  • Parent education classes are offered for parents with children of all ages. These sessions help parents model healthy behaviors and prevent drug abuse with their children.
  • Substance abuse prevention information
  • Annual Safe and Drug-Free Schools grant planning appointments
  • Asset development
  • Student surveys
  • Drug prevention coalition facilitation for the Eaton County Substance Abuse Advisory Group (ECSAAG), the Ingham Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition (ISAP) , and Clinton Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition (CSAP)
