In simplest of terms a curriculum is a series of planned instruction that is coordinated and articulated in a manner designed to result in the achievement by students of specific knowledge and skills and the application of this knowledge. Curricula in Michigan are determined by each school district and should be aligned to the Grade Level Content Expectations (GLCEs) and High School Course Expectations (HSCEs) approved by the Michigan State Board of Education. The Michigan legislature approved the Michigan Merit Curriculum in May of 2006 in an effort to increase the rigor and expectations of high school students in Michigan.
